Our 16-hour continuing education program is designed to give ALS providers an introduction into the realm of critical care.  Participants will be introduced to concepts such as laboratory studies, hemodynamic monitoring, essential medications, and ventilator management.

This course is intended to serve as an introduction to critical care in EMS.  It is not designed to train participants to the level of FP-C, CCP-C, CFRN, or CCEMT-P certifications.  However, those with FP-C, CCP-C, CFRN, or CCEMT-P certifications may indeed use this course toward recertification credits.

 

Course Objectives:

  • Describe the history of critical care transports, the composition of critical care teams, and the role of critical care in the prehospital environment.

  • Discuss legal aspect that affect critical care transports.

  • Review anatomy and physiology as it pertains to critical care.

  • Discuss basic and advanced airway management.

  • Define parameters for mechanical ventilation, its management, and strategies for troubleshooting.

  • Identify medications used in the realm of critical care and their indications / contraindications.

  • Understand the overall principles of laboratory/diagnostic analysis and the importance of abnormal results.

  • Discuss the elements and management of shock, including cardiogenic, septic, and obstructive shock.

  • Understand the essentials of hemodynamic monitoring and evaluation of the cardiovascular system

  • Discuss common medical and traumatic conditions the requirement critical care and their treatment strategies.

  • All instructors possess extensive experience in both teaching and critical care.

Continuing Education

  • This course has been approved for 16 CEUs (Med/Trauma) by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Bureau of EMS
